I love to look at surfaces, compose images and snap with my camera.

I love to look at rust and flaking paint, the vibrant colours and textures, and to compose images with my camera. Most of these images were taken at quarries in the Lake District.

Others were discovered on the sports field at Oakamoor.

I have many more photographs of flaking paint and rust, and other textures. I must add more albums.

Oakamoor sports field used to have a very pot-holed car park, and I dashed down with my camera whenever we had frost, and sometimes the ice patterns were wonderful, particularly when they reflect the blue of the sky or include the browny mud! Sadly, the sports field has been ‘taken in hand’, and now the car park offers me no pleasure!

We visited Northumberland again in July, and I was lucky to catch the light of the setting sun on the patterns made by the flow of the Embleton Burn as it flows into the cold North Sea. I love the blueness of the sea overlapping the sand.

I have studied the movement of Embleton Burn in the River running to the Sea album on the Northumberland section of the Britain page.

OVERSTRAND: A Norfolk Sea Wall (14)

We visited OVERSTRAND on the North Norfolk coast in September, just down the coast from Cromer,

I noticed the colourful and interesting character of the wall where one groyne was fixed to the cliff. Naturally I had to get my camera out!

WHITEHAVEN WALLS (15)

I spotted these rocks on a harbour wall in Whitehaven in early November (2014). It was approaching evening, so there was very little light, so they have had to have a little boost of levels.

I found them very exciting as a stimulation for artwork.

I printed some of the images onto canvas and accidentally distorted one while adding some paint and hand stitch. I like the distortion and have ‘accidentally, on purpose’ distorted the others.

THE WALL (15)

We went to Whitehaven again this November (2015), and although it was dull, I was able to spend more time enjoying ‘The Wall’ and taking photographs.

I think it is an amazing wall with all the colours and geological structures of the stones. I usually have to raise the levels and sometimes brightness and contrast to bring out the colour and texture of the wall, but I see them as I look at the wall, even without any added sharpness. There seemed so much more colour as I walked further along beside the wall. Some of the colours will be lichens, etc., but looking at the geology of Whitehaven, there do seem to be some very colourful rocks, judging by the rocks containing fossils as shown on geological websites. I have never really explored the beach and cliffs to look for fossils. The coast to St Bee’s is part of a Site of Special Geological Interest and not only for the St Bees red sandstone.

I am not a geologist but will read more.

These are close-up images of the abandoned boats at Salen on Mull. There are some smaller boats abandoned in the grass a little way from the main ‘tripod trail’ boats.

Perhaps it should be called a study of ropes!

SKYE SURFACES (26)

We visited the Isle of Skye in May but didn’t take many interesting photographs but I like these Elgol rock surfaces and the black and white sands of Talisker Bay. I will add more interesting surfaces from our Autumn 2012 visit, but some can be seen on the SCOTLAND page in the SKYE album. Geology is one of my interests, and so images of rocks often feature in my albums.
